SINGLE REVIEW | VANDERLYE – ONE WAY TRAIN by Morgan Hermiston

Starting the year off as they mean to go on, Glasgow’s upcoming talents Vanderlye take your rose-tinted glasses off, and show the world the truths and tribulations of real relationships. ‘One Way Train‘ fuses their instantly identifiable indie sound with an element of intimacy more intricate than previous work. The single is one of two now available ahead of their upcoming EP “Dystopia Calling“, following last year’s release of ‘Blackout Sky‘.

While love, relationships and the feelings from each, are common subjects in music, very few approach it with such honesty, and Vanderlye hone in on their signature sound that only makes this topic more prevalent. Writing from poignant positions isn’t anything new for Vanderlye. Frontman Sean McGarvey said that upon writing ‘One Way Train‘, he reflected by “looking at past relationships or relationships around me through rose-tinted glasses, or through social media“. In this track, he takes on the role of a narrator, removing this facade, and often false representation, while subsequently raising his own observations.

One Way Train‘ is an ethereal and evocative escapade, an addictive addition to an already impressive discography, it possesses an inherent ability to resonate well after listening. The EP name “Dystopia Calling” is perfect, and this newest single is striking in showing how everything isn’t always as it seems. Vanderlye have somehow managed to vividly encapsulate the concept of removing the blindfold and showing how so many areas of our lives are shaped around social media, and the impressions or opinions of those around us.

I highly recommend seeing this track, among their ever-growing collection of music, live. Their next headline show is on Saturday 24th January at King Tut’s in Glasgow. If you haven’t heard of Vanderlye by now, they’re a band to watch. Remaining tickets for their hometown headline can be found here.
