‘WEIRDO LIKE ME’ NIAMH MORRIS’ TWINKLING NEW TRACK
SINGLE REVIEW | NIAMH MORRIS – WEIRDO LIKE ME by Isobel O’Mahony
Glaswegian singer-songwriter Niamh Morris has released the second single off her upcoming EP Strawberries and Honey; ‘Weirdo Like Me’. This title did have me a little worried at first that it might be a slightly self-centered or ignorant track, but I knew I was wrong from the first note. There’s a gorgeous piano backing, simple keys like stepping stones for Nimah to carry each lyric through this magical tune. ‘Weirdo Like Me’ is actually a humble, thankful tribute to those in life we stand by through everything.
The song does have a beautiful message of sticking together, not because we have to but because we want to. There’s a repetition of not being “alone now” throughout the lyrics, a sentiment that’s nice to be reminded of every now and then. I think the simple pairing of a gorgeous voice and a clean cut piano upholds such a loving message of support, the lyrics don’t need a whole song and dance in the background, the composition is a perfect fit.
Niamh has this raw, angelical voice that blinds you from the lyrics at a first listen. For such a young artist, her voice has this stunning maturity; she is leading her vocals, not letting them lead her astray. Whilst ‘Weirdo Like Me’ is still a charming track, I would love to hear a more vocally experimental song or cover from Niamh – something that shouts in your face that she’s a jack of all trades.
I think we often forget that angel voices can also be booming and strong voices and I think a powerful tune would be really interesting to see, as she is already killing the stunning tear-jerker genre. I love seeing talented girls and their guitars/keyboards attempting to take on the world, and I hope to see Niamh Morris do just that in the future.
Niamh Morris’ debut EP Strawberries and Honey is releasing February 21st and if ‘Weirdo Like Me’ and first released single ‘When You Know, you know’ are anything to go by, it promises to be a solid and sweet listen.
