Midas. What a way to open a show. The lights dim, fans scream, and the band walks onto the stage.

Opening their headline show at Glasgow’s O2 Academy this Tuesday, Wunderhorse fans erupt into noise. The bands famed frontman, Jacob Slater, was born to perform, his nonchalant seeming persona switching out for split seconds of character break, he throws genuine screams and barks out at the crowd, they match his energy perfectly, screaming and yelling right back at him on the stage. His performance style is what has drawn in so many fans, it’s truly entrancing to witness it in person.

As the heavy guitar riffs of ‘Midas‘ fade out, they transition into a delicate stream of notes that introduce the hauntingly beautiful ‘Butterflies’. The band continued to captivate the audience with more selections from their latest album, performing ‘Emily’ and ‘Girl’. A highlight of the evening was the performance of ‘Girl Behind the Glass’, one of their most popular songs from their debut album, Cub. From that moment on, the setlist became a delightful mix of tracks spanning their entire discography.

The band recently had a bit of shake up when long term bassist Peter Wood in stepped down from the band after 7 years. Filling the gap is Sebastian Byford, son of Biff Byford (lead vocalist from the 70s heavy metal rock band Saxon). Seb has fit right in with the band’s energy and aesthetics, the fans loving the freshness of having a new band member.

However, Seb wasn’t the only newbie the band brought to Glasgow tonight as they tease their upcoming new single ‘The Rope’. Having showcased it at a handful of their recentshows, Glasgow had the privilege of hearing it too. ‘The Rope’ follows along a similar vibe of their latest album Midas, however has been met with a mixed reaction from fans who expected something more dynamic vibe from new music. Nonetheless, most fans are obsessed with the newest song, and will no doubt become another favourite over time.

As the set approached its conclusion, the band cleverly wove a brief excerpt of Bob Dylan’s iconic “All Along the Watchtower” into their own track, “Silver,” creating a delightful surprise for the audience. This seamless integration not only showcased their musical versatility but also paid homage to a legendary artist. To cap off the evening, they delivered an electrifying encore featuring their most popular hits, “Teal” and “July,” which had the crowd singing along and reveling in the moment.
