BIIG TIME: TOOK BROTHERS UNITE TO SOUND BIGGER THAN RECORD ON BRAND NEW SINGLE

SINGLE REVIEW | BIIG TIME – BIGGER THAN NOTHING by Gracie Erskine
After stealthily creeping out of the shadows, BIIG TIME are here to bring ‘Bigger Than Nothing’ which methods into its name. The breaths of anticipation can now settle back into regulation from the announcement of the cranking collaboration. Their support slot on Courteeners Australia dates, as well as their stand-alone 2020 single ‘It’s You’ has been a tease now satisfied. Composing of the two Took brothers; Johnny Took guitarist of critically acclaimed indie trio DMA’s and younger brother Matthew Took, singer of PLANET, following in the footsteps with his indie-athon quartet. The bands explosive new track acts as the lead single for their upcoming debut album ‘200k’, in an ear-bending batch of euphonic mayhem.
In chiming harmony for the sibling syndicate to join forces, the track is MEGA. An adequate title to describe, following in suit of the ultra-capitalisation the pair are so fond of. The track is electric, piercing through from the pistol. Pummelling drums and hounding bass contrast the crying shoegaze vocals in such delightful chaos. Prosperity runs through the veins of the track in a reflective cast, ‘I’m just not better than him, or better than her or bigger than nothing’, an introspective outburst. Erupting through the chaos the track prods and pokes at solidarity through song, in a way that makes you want to climb on the next strangers’ shoulders with your arms open wide and scream it out.
If you’re listening to the track from either side of the brothers, you can’t but be a fan. No, it’s not a techno U-turn from their previous works, but it’s not also not DMA’s in a dress- it’s fuller and richer. DMA’s latest efforts found themselves in their 2023 album ‘How Many Dreams?’ which lacked the anthemic weight of their previous works. Despite this, ‘Bigger Than Nothing’ seems to bring life back to party, with it’s a sing-along hooks and racing leads. It still manages to capture that DMA’s-esque in its ability to break down into a rugged acoustic bridge before its final lap, should you so crave it.

The latest creative venture feels like drawing back the velvet curtains on promising disorder, with your eyes and ears glued to the opportunity of the next. ‘200k’ releases Friday 9th May with an 11-track run looking propitious from the execution of ‘Bigger Than Nothing’.
