EMBRACE THE FEELING OF BEING A ‘WINNER’ THROUGH THE NEW SINGLE FROM NEON WALTZ

In July, the striking Scottish band Neon Waltz made a highly anticipated return with their first new music in three years. ‘Send Me Down‘ saw the quartet show us everything we’ve missed in that time, and more. Now, Neon Waltz are back again with their second new single, ‘Winner‘. We may be heading towards the end of summer, but this motivational moment is everything you need to maintain some positivity.
This newest release is a brilliant bass-infused track, with fluctuating mood shifts and vocals that soar above then lace themselves into the instrumentals. A carefully orchestrated crescendo of sound is heard before each chorus, with a more minimalistic melody following until the verses begin again. “I’m a winner” is the repetitive lyric running through the entirety of these simplistic segments.
‘Winner‘ was recorded in Glasgow with Tom Rees [The Bug Club, Panic Shack, Do Nothing]. Neon Waltz shares a slight similarity with the latter of those bands where vibrant vocals meet invigorating melodies, and they create captivating choruses that you’ll quickly find yourself remembering. I also think if you’re a fan of bands like Spector, where an element of tantalising theatrics trickle through into studio recordings, then you’ll love this new single. Once you’ve seen the music video that is linked at the bottom of this article, you may see what I mean. It provides a portrayal and picture to the words being sung.
In this music video, we see a “Neon Waltz Showdown” in a darts competition between vocalist and songwriter Jordan Shearer, and guitarist Kevin Swanson. Drummer Darren Coghill takes on the role of commentator, with fellow guitarist Jamie Swanson acting as caller/referee. With their personalities prevalent throughout the video, it’s quite easy to visualise this when you listen to ‘Winner‘ again afterwards.
‘Winner‘ isn’t a song you’ll grow tired of hearing; there’s an emphatic energy from start to finish. Neon Waltz have demonstrated, once again, their masterful musicianship in yet another track that will lure you into listening multiple times.
