HANNAH MAZEY IS CAREFREE IN NEWEST TRACK ‘RENT FREE’
SINGLE REVIEW | HANNAH MAZEY – RENT FREE by Morgan Hermiston
Following the release of previous single ‘White Wine‘, Wigan wonder Hannah Mazey returns with brand new single ‘Rent Free‘.
Adding to an already genre-combining collection of music, ‘Rent Free‘ discusses the idea of remaining in someone’s mind, despite the breakdown of your friendship. Mazey is meticulous yet minimalistic in her approach, providing a striking sentiment over a beautifully simplistic melody.
It’s never nice to know people are talking about you, but Mazey encourages listeners to adopt a positive spin. The chorus in ‘Rent Free‘ is plain, but pronounced. Mazey repeats, “maybe I still live in your head…rent free,” proposing the possibility that the spreading of negativity is simply because they can’t get you out of their mind.

Elsewhere, lyrics talk of reflecting on someone’s plans but asking, “how’s that working out?“. Mazey also makes a point of growing as a person. She mentions the hard-to-swallow reality of once being, “selfish, self-centred, entitled,” but that, “the person you knew doesn’t exist“. A lot of people will relate to the revelations in ‘Rent Free‘. It is a raw exploration of an irretrievable breakdown in a friendship, but with the maturity of accepting that each person could equally be at some fault.
As with her previous tracks, Mazey’s incredible incorporation of real-life observations are just as obvious. Her approach to songwriting can be compared to the likes of Nieve Ella, Sam Fender, and Declan McKenna, who all match deep concepts with lighter sounds. Mazey’s ability to utilise her personal experiences to expand her lyrical horizons has allowed her to explore subjects important to her in an inspiring way.
