FRENCH-BORN FUTURE-POP FIGURE FLEUR ROUGE SHARES ANTHEMIC NEW TRACK ‘HOMESICK’
SINGLE REVIEW | FLEUR ROGUE – HOMESICK By Michaela Roper
If explosive, supercharged electronic beats fused with unapologetic, anthemic femme-fatale lyricism is up your street, then look no further than FLEUR ROUGE’s latest offering, ‘HOMESICK’. It’s a track brimming with energy, and marks the turning point in her hyper-pop journey as the teaser for her upcoming project, and the third addition to her technicoloured discography.
The French-born, London-raised future-pop figure has carved an exciting path into a mountain of brash synth melodies, distorted rhythms, and chaotic vocal work, and her new single falls nothing short of the definition of hyper-pop. ‘HOMESICK’ is an unapologetically out-there track which effortlessly showcases FLEUR ROUGE’s colourful spectrum of sound, layered with a sense of lyrical vulnerability and raw storytelling that crafts a multi-faceted soundscape that tells tales of emotional turmoil. Although on the surface, the single feels vibrant, FLEUR deals with darker themes that weave their way throughout the brighter future-pop melodies.
‘HOMESICK’ taps into the sensitive side of FLEUR ROUGE’s artistry. The track opens with a crisp electronic beat that bounces into the corners of an acoustic-driven sonic injection; the singer’s recognisable playfulness still echoes across the soundscape, but her lyrics appear soft and forbearing before building to a buzzing climax laced with electrical distortion and chaotic fuzz.
From a mid-verse language switch to French, to the unguarded outpouring of emotion in each chorus, the cathartic track truly showcases FLEUR’s ability to transform challenging experiences into resonant pop cuts with wide appeal.
Amongst the vulnerable lyrical stints and floods of frustration channelled into technoid vocal filter, FLEUR ROUGE’s maximalist approach to boundary-pushing instrumentals seems to be consistent across her litany of singles. ‘HOMESICK’ is built upon the classic arbiters of her hyper-pop sound, and doesn’t shy away from standing outside of the mainstream.
Regardless, FLEUR ROUGE has gained honourable mentions and heightened praise from the likes of BBC Radio 1, BBC Introducing, and Amazing Radio, alongside features in CLASH, Notion, Ones To Watch, and Clout. Her out-there attitude and unapologetic reputation of blurring the lines between girly synth-pop and darker, ruminative lyrical work has certainly paid off, and has placed FLEUR ROUGE on the track to future-pop stardom as she kickstarts a brand new era following on from her latest EP, ‘WISH YOU THE WORST’.
