Thoughts are with the family, friends and fans of legendary Stone Roses bassist Gary ‘Mani’ Mounfield who has passed away, aged 63.

In a social media post earlier today, Mani’s brother Greg shared “It is with the heaviest of hearts that I have to announce the sad passing of my brother Gary Mani Mounfield. RIP RKID”.

It is understood that Mani collapsed at home earlier today, and despite attempts by the Ambulance service to revive him, he was sadly pronounced dead shortly afterwards. His death comes less than 2 years since the passing of his beloved wife Imelda, who battle bowel cancer all the way to end.

Joining Stone Roses in the 80’s, Mani was a fundamental part of the Stone Roses sound that would go on to define a generation. In 1996, he would join Primal Scream before rejoining Stone Roses for their reunion tour in 2012.

His basslines were not just supportive; but melodic, funky, and utterly foundational. Whether it was the effortless, driving pulse beneath the anthems of The Stone Roses or the acid-house-fuelled swagger he brought to Primal Scream, Mani provided the rock-steady, charismatic anchor that allowed chaos and genius to flourish around him.

A vibrant, hilarious, and much-loved figure in the music world, Mani’s contribution to rock and dance music is immeasurable. As tributes flood in for the much loved musician, a true legend, whose infectious energy and unforgettable sound continue to move generations, we would like to join them and send out heartfelt wishes to those closest to Mani. RIP x
