INTERVIEW | LYNNIE SNOW – SOUND CITY by Morgan Hermiston

The first set we caught at Liverpool’s Sound City on Sunday was Lynnie Snow. The room was packed, and the cheers and applaud were loud. Not long after the performance, we caught up with Lynnie to talk about how this set went, who she’s currently listening to, and highlights of a music career.

On how the set went, Lynnie told me, “It went really well,” she began, “it was actually one of the best sets we’ve done because I was really anxious for it. So seeing that we actually did it, and it was so good. I mean, it was at capacity! There was no space to move at all [in the crowd]“.

Musical Diversity and Highlighting Venues

Lynnie and I spoke a bit about finding new music, and how accidentally finding artists make an impact. “I feel like a lot of people that you find are accidental anyway. I definitely don’t sit down and think ‘I’m going to find new music’, you just happen upon things and then they end up being a part of things. I mean, there’s bands which I head of years ago, and you, kind of, have them in your atmosphere a while before you realise, ‘oh they’re actually worth listening to“.

We also spoke about opposites in music tastes, whether sonically or through songwriting. “I think a lot of the music that I listen to, I categorise in my head as either electronic or not electronic. I really like, really old, 60s folk songs recorded on these poor quality things, but then I like, not so much at the moment, but I’m really into noise music. Listening to it is more of an experience“. “No genres and music feel super far apart to me“.

I asked Lynnie if there were any venues that she’s played that she wants to highlight, or that stand out. She started by saying, “I think one of the nicest places I’ve played was the Alphabet in Brighton, because I’m from Brighton, I’m based in Brighton at the moment. I think that’s a really underrated one.”

“There’s just buildings, and you don’t see it at all. There’s a wall, and there’s a door, it doesn’t even have a sign or anything, you just have to know where it is. When you go in, it’s gorgeous inside…even the green room was nice. I would say Alphabet in Brighton is definitely an underappreciated venue“.

Describing Lynnie’s Music

For people that aren’t yet aware of Lynnie Snow, or the music she makes, I asked Lynnie to describe her sound. So if you’re a fan of anyone she mentions, then she’s one to watch.

I would say it’s kind of a mix…the top four people that me and my band always like to compare it to is David Bowie, Kate Bush, Massive Attack, and Alex G, all put into one. Quite far apart in genres, but I think if you listen to it, you’d see all those influences. I listen to quite a lot of different things, because my whole process with making music is to try and get elements from everything that I like, and pull it all together, which makes it quite hard to define as one thing. But ultimately, it is rock“.

Highlights and Looking Forward.

Lynnie mentioned at the start of the interview that this Sound City set was one of the best she’s ever played. I was wondering if there were other highlights so far. “There’s nothing that crazy really,” she began, “there’s just certain days where everything just works out. I remember playing a set in London, it was one of my first London shows, it was at Shackwell Arms. A load of us went there in a little mini bus…and the set went perfectly and loads came out of it afterwards“.

Continuing, Lynnie said, “I just remember walking out of that thinking that was such a good time“. She added, “the things I actually remember and the first things that come to mind when you ask that are just, like, a day where you do a gig and just everything goes right. And the whole day is fun…it’s just a good time“.

We also chatted about things Lynnie was looking forward to. “I’m looking forward, actually, to the releases of my music, more than anything. I actually like everything other than the live shows. Performing is the bottom of the list for what I like about music. We have a song coming out in May, with a final release, and we’re going to literally hand make all the covers“.

Lynnie continued, “I’m really looking forward to that, and ultimately, we don’t quite know yet for sure which day, but we’re going to release an album. And that, I think, is going to be what I’m looking forward to most. It’s all your hard work for ages, putting it together, you actually see it in real life“.

Final Shoutout

My final question for Lynnie tied back in with Sound City as a whole. I asked if there was anyone she wanted to see that day, seeing as this interview was at the very beginning of the Sunday. She had mentioned that she would be going to see whoever happened to be on, with no set plan. However, she did say, “I’m going to give a little shoutout to SLAG, who have already played [on Saturday]. SLAG are also from Brighton, they’re a Brighton based band, and I think they’re really cool. They’re doing really well, and they work really hard“.
