Manchester indie-rock band, Pastel give us a tease of what to expect from their debut album set to release this year with their new single ‘Dancing on a Pin’.

With #1 and #2 vinyl chart positions from EPs Deeper Than Holy and Isiah, it has always been a question of not if, but when, for the 5-piece Manchester band. With a memorable supporting set at Liam Gallagher’s Knebworth show; and with some huge headline gigs scheduled, is it any wonder fans have been screaming for more from this electric indie outfit? Premiered on BBC 6 Music, Steve Lamacq described the single as “Latter day shoegaze with a bit of swagger to it”. An abundance of critical acclaim even saw Oasis bassist Andy Bell calling it “Magic”.

Produced by Afflecks Palace frontman and Spirit of Spike Island label founder J. Fender, it is a nod to their roots in Manchester and “an ode to focusing on your own development as an artist and a human without distraction.” ‘Dancing On A Pin’ is a second insight of what to expect from their highly anticipated debut album set for release later this year. First taster and B-side to this single, ‘Your Day‘ was an instant hit when released. With over 60,000 streams on Spotify alone after releasing in late 2023, the hype is building around these young northern talents.

The blend of psychedelia and distorted indie-rock riffs makes for a track that can only be described as an effortlessly cool anthemic banger. The partnership between Rhys Wheeler on the drums and lead guitarist Joe Anderson is something to behold on this track. They complement each other beautifully right the way through and provide those head-nodding grooves that Pastel are becoming known for. The perfect rhythmic tightness from the band allows lead singer Jack Yates to display his powerful yet characterful lyricism and vocals. His mystic aura is expressed faultlessly throughout what he is calling “an F U to time wasters.”

Dancing On A Pin‘ is an enthralling pronouncement for Pastel’s year to come. They will play their two biggest headline shows to date at London’s Garage and Manchester’s Band on the Wall in the next few months, as well as supporting Feeder on two dates of their UK tour.

A band with a sound as big as their ambition. Anyone who says there’s no great bands coming through, you’re wrong; listen to this right now.
