So, how does Record Store Day impact independent record stores like Record Junkee?
I think it’s a fantastic opportunity to showcase the store. We get many people coming in who might never have visited before, and they get to experience what a great space it is. We’ll have live bands playing on the day, the coffee shop will be open, and the bar will serve from midday. Of course, there’s also the chance to pick up limited-edition vinyl that is only available at independent stores. It’s still absolutely vital to encourage people to come into the store rather than shop online.
How long has this store been open, and have you been involved?
For three decades, I’ve immersed myself in the vibrant world of record selling in Sheffield, navigating various roles and venues, from the eclectic shelves of Reflex Records to the lively atmosphere of Record Junkee. This particular spot, a beloved hub for music enthusiasts, has proudly welcomed shoppers and collectors for almost 11 years, becoming a cornerstone of the local music scene.
And have you been involved with Record Store Day from the beginning?
We’ve participated from the start, with just one exception last year. We felt it had lost some of its edge, but we’re back on board this year.
Right. So, what special releases or exclusive vinyls are you most excited about this year? Are there any you’re planning to snag for yourself?
Honestly, I’m not as into collecting vinyl these days as I was. The lad downstairs has handled most of the ordering this year. I’m sure there’ll be something in there, anything soul, funk, or jazz; that’s my kind of thing. But really, that’s his department now.
How has Record Store Day evolved since its inception, and has Record Junkee adapted to those changes?
I think it’s stayed true to its core. It’s still exclusively for independent stores, and there’s only a limited number of each release, so it’s very much a first-come, first-served deal. We’ve adapted by making sure to accommodate the demand. Thanks to the size of our store, we usually fit more people than most shops, which helps manage the queue.
Speaking of the queue, what’s the atmosphere like on the day? Any memorable moments?
Oh, the atmosphere is always brilliant. We do live music every year. This time, we’ve got three bands and a DJ playing. Plus, there’s a dance event over the road at Network. One of the headline acts is even popping over for a meet-and-greet in the afternoon. It’s a big day—coffee, live music, vinyl, dancing, and drinks. What’s not to love?
Do you think Record Store Day has helped revive interest in vinyl collecting?
Absolutely. Vinyl is at a real peak right now. People want to own something again physically, rather than just have files on their computers. There’s something special about holding an album, admiring the artwork, and getting excited about buying music again. Record Store Day has definitely contributed to that, especially with some items doubling in value just weeks after release.
Finally, how do you prepare for the day, and what challenges come with hosting such a major event?
The records start arriving about two weeks before, so there’s a lot of unpacking, pricing, and making sure everything’s accounted for. Sometimes you order 20 copies of something and only get two, it’s unpredictable. We order from around 15–20 different suppliers, and they must divide limited stock among all the shops. It keeps you on your toes, that’s for sure!
Is there anything else you’d like to share about Record Store Day or the store?
Just a reminder to keep supporting independent businesses and the small bands performing at free gigs throughout the day. It’s all connected, keeping the music scene alive. Long may it continue!
