Kicking off Summer Series 2025 was none other than 2010’s hip-hop trailblazers Rizzle Kicks, who have recently made a comeback following over a decade’s hiatus.
After a momentous performance at Glastonbury, the London-based duo brought their infectious hits, new and old, to a sold-out Somerset House.
“I had no expectations with these shows. We thought nobody would come out but this sh*t sold out. We didn’t gig for a decade,” the duo laughs on stage. The reality is that people have been eagerly awaiting their return, and when their surprise album Competition Is For Losers dropped this year, it also came with critical praise.
Bouncing through their memorable back catalogue, Mama Do The Hump and When I Was A Youngster to newer ones, Bad Tattoo and Javelin, they proved that they’ve still got it, and their approach to a live show demonstrates maturity. Both of them are now grown up and in love, living very different lives from the ones they left when they dipped out of the music scene due to mental health.
The stage was decorated with charming flowers and a ‘Loser’ podium, and the pair were accompanied by a full band who grinned from start to finish. Throughout the night, they also commanded the crowd at random intervals, shouting “Competition is for…” and the audience finishing with “Losers!”. The audience weren’t their only fan either, later inviting Rachel Chinouriri as a special guest to sing on Follow Excitement, their latest collaboration.
