SWEAT AND SPICE: MELANIE C BRINGS NEW ALBUM TO GLASGOW

Last night, we had an actual Spice Girl in town with Melanie C, aka Sporty Spice, performing to a stripped back set to sold out crowd at Glasgow’s SWG3 Warehouse. Partnering exclusively with Assai Records to support the release of her brand new album Sweat, Mel wasted no time living up to its title.

Bringing the euphoria of 90s Ibiza to Glasgow on a Tuesday night, she captured the high energy of the dancefloor with a precision that only a veteran pop icon can command. Every pocket of the room was filled with an infectious joy that her dedicated fanbase gripped onto from the first beat. Taking the stage with her trademark northern charm and effortless movement, her unmistakable vocals melted like butter across the room.

On her ninth studio album, Sweat (released May 1st), Mel reconnects with the dance roots that defined her early influences. Opening with the record’s titular track, Mel used this intimate ‘outstore’ performance to drive through recent singles like ‘What Could Possibly Go Wrong’, ‘Undefeated Champion’, and ‘Attitude’. While the set was a “mini” showcase for the new era, the crowd was still treated to favourites ‘Never Be The Same Again’, ‘Northern Star’, and the legendary ‘I Turn To You’ from her 1999 solo debut. These tracks have been heard for decades, yet they still ignite that “first listen” enthusiasm every time.

Despite being one-fifth of the biggest girl group on the planet, she remains refreshingly grounded. Mel took time between tracks to chat to the crowd, even inviting fans on stage to sing alongside her, delivering a comforting confidence that you can’t help but admire.

At heart, she is still Sporty, paying homage to her roots with a stripped back rendition of the iconic ‘Spice Up Your Life’ that left everybody singing along. The night was a perfect gift for the fans who have stood by her for years. As she gears up for a worldwide tour, this performance was a perfect taster of what’s to come—especially as she prepares to return to the bounciest dancefloor in the world at the Glasgow Barrowland Ballroom this October – tickets on sale here.
