TAILORED FOR A LIVE ENVIRONMENT : SUNDAY (1994) TALK NEW MUSIC AND NBHD WEEKENDER

INTERVIEW with SUNDAY (1994) | By Keira Knox
We are now firmly in arms length of festival season. NBHD Weekender is less than 20 days away, with stage splits and excitement building it’s only right that we speak to one of the festivals most anticipated acts, Sunday (1994).
They first appeared in 2024 as Sunday (1994), a British-American dream-pop ensemble with infectious tracks and an instantly recognisable retro look. They have gone viral on TikTok in the year since and are currently selling out live performances across the globe.
“It’s been fun writing this new music after playing our first shows at the end of last year.” Lee Newell tells Northern Exposure about the writing process for the bands latest track, ‘Rain’. ” It sort of informed our writing for the new music. So a lot of these songs are tailored for a live environment.”
Frontwoman Paige Turner finds deeper meaning in song writing. Turner uses her tracks as a way to convey the mundane everyday life in a melodic and relatable sense. “A lot of our songs are really just real life things that are going on in our world and things we’re experiencing or going through or places we’re visiting or places we have visited. We try and highlight the more minute parts of life, I suppose, and try and glamorise and maximise them.”
NBHD Weekender is renowned for giving a platform to some of the best upcoming talent from around the world, and this year Sunday (1994) are set to grace the Viola Beach Stage for the festivals return. “I hope people have fun watching our set. We’re having so much fun up there.” Turner explains, “We have such a good time with our band. We have a drummer and we also have a live bassist, this girl Lola Collette, who’s amazing. We just have so much fun between the four of us that I hope other people are feeling our vibe up there! I’m looking forward to Neighbourhood Weekender, I think it’s going to be really fun!”
The lineup for 2025 is nothing short of phenomenal. Alongside Sunday (1994) on the Viola Beach Stage there’s artists such as Luvcat, Chloe Slater, Siobhan Winifred, The Guestlist and more. “I’m excited to see Inhaler! Wunderhorse and Ocean Colour Scene will be amazing too!” Paige Turner states as they both scan through the lineup with excitement. “Starsailor are playing too, that’s crazy! I’m just really excited to see Wunderhorse they’re so, so good live!”
