The Clause have battled the odds to break out of the underground and make their dream of becoming Britain’s next major rock ‘n’ roll band a reality. Bringing together the timelessness of the ‘60s with the mammoth grooves of the ‘80s and the riotous attitude of the ‘90s, the band have achieved great things already, including Radio 1 and 6 Music airplay, an iTunes Rock Chart #1, a set at Radio 1’s Big Weekend, and gigs with The Reytons, DMA’s and The Snuts. Now The Clause are poised to fulfill their immense potential with the news that they will release their eagerly anticipated debut album ‘Victim Of A Casual Thing’ on October 17th.
Pearce Macca (vocals/guitar), Jonny Fyffe (bass) and Niall Fennell (drums) have been friends since school, and completed the band when Pearce met guitarist Liam Deakin at a JAWS show. They were just sixteen-years-old when they recorded their first demo, and were soon making waves with early tracks such as ‘Sixteen’ and ‘In My Element’, before their talents and reputation were amplified over the course of two EPs. Now the release of ‘Victim Of A Casual Thing’ will realise an ambition that they’ve always been striving for.
Naturally, it’s a record which expresses the highs and lows of their journey: the desire to dream big, regardless of what obstacles stand in their way. It will speak to those kindred spirits who are also brave or foolish enough to chase something more from life than the infinite rut of working an ordinary job in an ordinary town. But despite its modest roots, it’s a record that sizzles with big stage ambition. The Clause blend the anthemic scale of Sam Fender, The Killers and The Strokes with the immediacy of ‘80s pop and an undercurrent of disco-tinged grooves.
Pearce says, “This record is soaked in the culture of growing up in the UK. It carries the echoes of wild nights and fragile mornings, broken relationships and faded ambitions. There’s no pretence here—just four young heads trying to make sense of it all. This is the sound of feeling lost and insignificant in a city that doesn’t slow down, and the fight to rise above it. The emotion is real, raw, and loud.
The title speaks for itself. It’s about all the ways life can quietly pull you off course without warning. Falling into jobs that were never meant to last. Flings that leave something lasting behind. Expectations shaping who we’re meant to be before we even get a say. Growing up where dreams are easy to laugh at but hard to live out. And yet, we’re right here, in our mould – and that’s okay. That’s something to be proud of. Because it’s ours. In the whirlwind of it all, maybe we don’t realise how lucky we are to be here. This record is the soundtrack of four mates growing up together, turning chaos into chords.”
The Clause launch the album with the lead single ‘Nothing’s As It Seems’. It’s a statement of intent from a band who perform every moment as if their lives depend upon it, from Pearce’s soaring vocals to its fiery rhythmic intensity through to its gritty guitar textures and luminous bursts of synths. Just as importantly the message is pure optimism: “Don’t waste your time wishing that you were somewhere, ‘cause nothing matters when you’re six foot under – so cling on to those fading hopes and dreams.”
Pearce adds, “Feeling as if I’m drowning beneath all the noise in the town I was born and raised, ‘Nothing’s As It Seems’ emerged. Whilst everyone around me seems to have their life figured out, it narrates the turmoil of trying to cling onto expiring dreams and sticking two fingers up to the world in the wake of falling short.”
‘Victim Of A Casual Thing’ is now available to pre-order HERE. The album will be released on vinyl, CD, cassette and digital download/streaming formats.
