THE ROUTINE’S LONDON HEADLINE: A ROCKING SUCCESS FOR REAL SOUNDS
The REAL Sounds crew sure know how to put on a gig. Last Saturday, The Waiting Room in Stoke Newington, London, featured a triple bill of some incredible talent in an intimate (and thankfully air-conditioned) basement underneath The Three Crowns.
Rufus Miller kicked off the evening with their band, playing some phenomenal alt-psych-rock. It was my first time seeing them, and I honestly cannot wait to see them again. Their latest EP ‘Fly Me Away’ is absolutely sensational, and seeing it live was wonderful. ‘Down to Church’ took my breath away, and at multiple points during their set, I kept locking eyes with other members of the audience, we’d always end up nodding our heads and mouthing “yessss” at each other.
Good Health (formerly Staycations) came next, and killed it: an absolutely fitting way to end a decade of their band under their previous name. Their sound has become edgier, and punkier, a common occurrence from grassroots bands in 2024. They played a host of as yet unreleased music as well as a few old favourites, but all of them were great. I adore their passion for music, vocalist Lewis is a sensational frontman who fills any room he’s in with energy.
Finally headliners The Routine, a band so good, I saw them live twice last week on their tour celebrating their new album (‘Casualty’) release. The album is amazing and it’s great live. Their song ‘How Did We Make it This Far’ features one of the greatest lines in any song I know, “you’re just a 420 girl, I’m a 9 to 5 kind of guy”; much like the rest of their music, it’s catchy, it’s edgy, and it’s great to scream along to in the front row. ‘Come Knocking At My Bedroom Door’ is one of their older songs, but it still hits just as hard. Not only do The Routine play superb music, they’re also genuinely lovely people, and you can’t help but find their chatter between songs incredibly heart-warming.
REAL Sounds gigs have you leaving with a smile on your face and new niche music to listen to, and I can’t think of anything better to get out of an evening. So keep an eye out for their line-ups on their socials for more unforgettable evenings of music from amazing emerging artists. And give The Routine‘s new album a listen, because it’s 100% worth your time.
