TOOTH BEGIN THEIR UK TOUR WITH EXCEPTIONAL ENERGY |

Kicking off their UK Tour, and setting the bar impossibly high, Tooth took on an enthusiastic crowd in Glasgow‘s King Tut’s. Alongside support from Uncle Junior, the formidable four-piece took on the invigorated crowd with a dual purpose. The celebratory show marked the release of their debut EP Restless in Bloom, which came out in June, but also debuted some brand new material.

I only managed to catch the latter half of Uncle Junior’s set, but from what I did see, I thought they were equally as impressive as the headline act. There was a stunning simplicity to a lot of their material. Instrumentals were incorporated more heavily as opposed to a whole lot of lyrics. This worked for them because even though there were a lot of melodies to listen to, their eccentric, experimental energy made this easily enjoyable. The trio are definitely a band I’d love to catch again. You can find them supporting Tooth at future shows, including Bristol and London. Their debut single ‘Melt Me‘ was also released in September, so you can get an insight into their style before you catch them at a show.

The band was welcomed onto the stage by an audience that quickly built up an anticipatory atmosphere and held it throughout. After a couple of songs, while guitars were being tuned, frontman Tom Pollock spoke about how they’d played Glasgow twice previously. On the second show, he’d mentioned someone had fainted, so their set was unfortunately cut short. Luckily, for everyone, nobody fainted, and we were treated to a stunning full-length set.

Their setlist danced between songs from Restless in Bloom, like ‘The Age of Innocence‘, and the debut of dynamic new tracks. After one song, Pollock said, “Now, the latest hit single from Tooth“, before the catchy guitar riff from ‘Take Me As I Am‘ sparked yet another burst of energy. The song was released less than a week before the show, so it was really intriguing to see just how many people knew the words from listening, and seeing them at shows before this one.

I was really impressed by the diversity in their catalogue and performance, and I can’t believe it’s taken me this long to finally see them live. Every tune allowed different aspects of the band to shine through. Some songs allowed drummer Roy Lowe to be brought to the forefront, with lead guitarist Ben Ashley and bassist Charlie Arnison showing off hooks and riffs that helped keep momentum moving. ‘Wallflower‘, as the penultimate track, was one of those moments I’m sure a lot of acts seek to eventually have. The choruses of this song had everyone singing along with its powerfully poignant sentiments.

I’m always a bit wary of giving five-star reviews to bands this quickly, because I always feel there are areas that can be looked at and perhaps improved. However, with Tooth, the only thing I’d want to see more of is new music and bigger stages. I think they’re a band that is eager to move around their surroundings and interact more with the fans that got them to where they are. With energy as exceptional as this, I don’t think it’ll be long at all until we’re seeing them fulfil those wishes.

The intimate venue was packed out, but this sold-out show only proved that this is just the beginning for Tooth. If you haven’t heard of them already, or haven’t managed to catch them live, now is your chance. To be selling out venues as iconic as King Tut’s this early on is all the evidence you need.
