SINGLE REVIEW | HALF HAPPY – WELL DONE HONEY by Morgan Hermiston | 5/5

Welsh indie group Half Happy release second single of 2024, ‘Well Done Honey‘ as part of upcoming debut EP “Conversation Killer“. The Cardiff quartet’s latest track is one that discusses topics many of us will be familiar with including long days at work, and questioning whether it’s all actually worth it.

Accompanying frontwoman Rosalie Miller in Half Happy are drummer Zac Noneley, bassist Jon Wilson and guitarist Pete Smith. Together, the four-piece have produced a track full of foot-tapping tempos while still being easy to listen to. Not putting themselves into a specific genre, Half Happy like to venture into different styles including post-punk, dream-pop and indie-rock. ‘Well Done Honey‘ seems to fall more into the latter category, with a familiar fresh feel to it.

Rosalie talked about how the track “was written in one sitting after an extremely bad day at work“. She also mentioned how it is “quite a literal song about working under a strict boss“. This is something a huge number of people will have been through, making the scope for relatability much higher.

Well Done Honey‘ is a motivational mantra that asks “am I good enough?” yet gives a positive spin. Rosalie had said how the idea of everyone else crying in their cars after a stressful day at work made her “laugh, like I was in 194 or something“. The positive and motivating turn comes at the end where Rosalie notes that it is “me shaking myself that I made it home, I didn’t die and work isn’t the end of the world“.

This notion is one vastly different to many tracks being released. Where most tunes are about love and relationships, Half Happy discuss a realistic revelation of not being happy in our employment, and wondering if our unhappiness is endless so long as we remain in that work. They congratulate listeners for getting to the end of their shifts, and carrying on in order to create the life we want.

If you’re a fan of songs that are easy to listen to, yet still include underlying messages, then you’ll love ‘Well Done Honey‘. You’ll also adore Half Happy and their other tunes. Look out for “Conversation Killer“, their debut EP set for release on September 20th. To accompany this release, Half Happy will also be venturing on several shows across the UK.
