CHAMP’S LATEST SINGLE ‘FUTURE’ IS ADDICTIVE AND ATMOSPHERIC
SINGLE REVIEW | CHAMP – FUTURE by Morgan Hermiston
Hartlepool’s Champ are quickly becoming a quintessential indie-rock quartet. Not long after the release of their debut single ‘Taste To Run‘ in June, Champ have already amassed over 30,000 streams, making them a band you should definitely watch our for. Second single ‘Future‘ hopes to follow in these footsteps with an equally addictive and atmospheric sound.
The four-piece are formed by vocalist Jonny Bee, who shares guitar responsibilities with Luke Cowley. Bassist Will Hamilton and drummer Tom Sotheran accompany them, forming the fundamental foundation that Champ build their momentous melodies around.
At just over 2 minutes, Champ’s second single ‘Future‘ is shorter than the average track. However, they’ve managed to pack a whole lot of identity into a shorter single, making it easier to hit replay over and over. With heartfelt lyricism and infectious indie-rock incorporations, it’s a single you’ll definitely find yourself coming back to. Lyrics like, “I close my eyes and it takes me back to you,” provide a poignant persona below a surface of a thumping tempo and incredible instrumentations.
Discussing the single and their songwriting style, the band said, “when it comes to writing songs, we always like to put ourselves in someone else’s shoes“. They also dedicated this tune to, “anyone who’s ever chased a life they couldn’t quite touch, whilst trying not to forget themselves“.
While it has its own deeper sentiment, ‘Future‘ has a balance between the melody and meaning that a lot of other songs don’t quite get right. Champ promise new music in the coming months, so it’ll be intriguing to see where they take their sound next. You can catch Champ at a range of live dates including two Manchester shows on 23rd October and 13th November, as well as a hometown show in Hartlepool on 20th December.
