SINGLE REVIEW | MATILDA SHAKES – TRANSMISSION by Morgan Hermiston

When I saw Matilda Shakes on the final day of Tramlines this year, I talked about the final song they played and how, “it’ll be intriguing to see how they contain such energy into a studio release“. That song was ‘Transmission‘, and it sparks a new chapter in Matilda Shakes journey. As far as the statement I made in that article, my intrigue was met with a tune that has just managed to contain that emphatic energy.

Acting as the ignition to the invigorating track is the line, “wired to the madness“. Noticeable notions of noise are transported throughout. Later lyrics like those in the bridge extend that excitement, “cut the feed, let the signal scream“. Riffs rip through and immediately spark the striking surroundings that follow.

It’s easy for loud and animated atmospheres, like that created in ‘Transmission‘, to drown out vocals. However, a precise production has allowed James Hallam‘s voice to remain vibrant and easily heard. If you’re missing the festival life, or are craving the charismatic character of many live bands, then Matilda Shakes have created the perfect song to extend that feeling, or temporarily satisfy that longing.

‘Transmission‘ acts as the first insight into Matilda Shakes next EP The Limits. Aptly named, this initial single pursues a liveliness that pushes limits, and you can listen to it here. You’ll have to wait until February 2027 for this new EP to be released, but Matilda Shakes are embarking on a series of shows where you may just get to hear some of it in advance. Tickets for these, including a huge hometown headline show in Sheffield, can be found here.
