POP ROCK POWERHOUSE KIND VILLAIN TALKS HIS LATEST SINGLE, THE PRESSURES OF SOCIAL MEDIA, AND ‘FOCUSING ON YOUR TIMELINE’
Kind Villain, the new gen, rising pop-rock star, has been honing his sound over the past five years, but has reached a creative height just in time for summer 2026. Since his latest single Bedroom Genius is hot off the press, we got the chance to speak to him and talk all things music, inspirations, and his dream movie score feature…
Your latest single, Bedroom Genius, has been enjoying its first week or two hot off the press on streaming platforms. How has it been gleaning people’s initial responses to it? Nerve-racking? Exciting? Both?
Both for sure, there was definitely some experimentation and unfiltered emotions that went into this song. Whenever you create something new it’s exciting because you can’t wait for people to be surprised, but you’re also thinking, hopefully they understand the message of this song, and so far they have and it’s been amazing.
Speaking of people’s responses to music, this single – and your most recent work in general – is highly concerned with building a life in an age of intense social media attention. Why was this an important creative focus for you?
Because I go through it every day, not just as an artist but as a person. I have these conflicting thoughts daily of comparison and overthinking and I realized that everyone I know is going through the same thing. This topic isn’t discussed enough in my opinion and although there are positives to social media, the negativity can also be a common enemy we all fight against, so why not together.
Do you have a favourite line / part of Bedroom Genius that you’re especially proud of? Why?
My favorite line in Bedroom Genius is “I build castles from the pain, then the panic hits me.” I love the 1st verse because of how vulnerable it is, but this line specifically wraps up the entire emotion of the song which is “if I build something great will it actually mean anything in modern society?” That verse words my thoughts perfectly – shout out to my collaborator Paul for helping me get to that place and share those emotions.
If you could only save three things from said bedroom in an emergency, what would they be?
My main Dean bass guitar, my flash drive with all my ideas, and my cross necklace. If I had a 4th I may grab my Xbox lol.
You’ve got a fantastic range of musical influences, from the heights of pop to grunge nostalgia. Who’s an artist / band you take inspiration from that might surprise people who have heard your music? How and why have they influenced you?
Post Malone is a big influence on Kind Villain when it comes to melodies and the incorporation of Hip Hop elements into my music. His songwriting is brilliant and the way he words things in a simple but intricate way amazes me. I also love Synth Pop and the Weeknd inspires me to keep pushing myself as an artist to reach new heights.
You’ve been releasing music as Kind Villain for a good few years now. What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned on the way?
That it’s a journey, and building something takes time and patience. I look back at where I was even six months ago and I realize that everyday I’m getting closer to where I want to be. It’s important to not compare yourself to others and keep pushing and focusing on your timeline, not somebody else’s.
If you could write a song for the score of any movie, which would it be and why?
I love the ‘Tron’ soundtracks and synth pop is one of my favorite genres and I’ve actually written some songs and instrumentals in that style. Daft Punk had their take on it so did Nine Inch Nails, I would love to score the next ‘Tron’ film.
