BRAES BRING SPECTACULAR NEW EP TO GLASGOW’S QMU
Braes (Olivia McCallum)
EP AND LIVE REVIEW | BRAES – OF ALL THE THINGS I ENVY – LIVE FROM QMU by Olivia McCallum
of all the things i envy is the perfect alt rock shoegaze EP. It is an absolute must listen. Braes build these stunning soundscapes that take you on a journey from song to song, exploring themes of resentment, inadequacy and of course, envy.

‘limerence’ is the perfect opening to the EP. It slowly builds in energy throughout and introduces the key melodic themes for the rest of the EP.
We then move on to my favourite track of this release and that is ‘kafkaesque‘. It’s a beautiful song that I simply cannot get enough of.
Every track is incredible in its own right but as a collection, the EP is immaculate.
The EP ended with ‘north star, i love you’, which was nothing short of immense. A stunning end to the release, it wraps up the EP seamlessly, tying up all of the themes into a perfect bow.

I was lucky enough to hear the EP live the the QMU. It was a perfect night and with the tracks sounding even better live.
The first band on was Circin, who were performing for the first time ever. It was a great first performance packed full of originals I can’t wait to hear more of and an incredible cover of ‘Alison’ by Slowdive.

Next up was Oh Romance. They had been on my radar for a while so it was great finally getting to catch them. Their set was a perfect fusion of alternative indie, pop punk and post punk sounds.

Finally we were on to the main act of the night. Braes were beyond incredible. The show started off with the interlude track from the EP straight into ‘envy’, the first single from the release.
The set was a perfect balance of new tracks from the EP and classics from the first, such as the song ‘sunbeams’ which was the opening track on their debut release.

The band alluded to big plans for gig over the next few months and I a beyond excited to see them live again.
For fans of Hum, Slowdive and Bleech 9:3, of all the things i envy is an essential addition to your playlist.
