HEAVY WEATHER’S NEW SINGLE ‘WHITE NOISE’ IS ANYTHING BUT

Heavy Weather’s ‘White Noise’ sounds like a fleeting breakaway, a glimpse of the sun, just before it fades away. It’s a promise made to oneself, to feel each experience to the fullest – as though it is “the last time”.

On their brand new single, Heavy Weather are coming up against the monotony of everyday life – the eponymous “white noise” keeping them down, conflicting with their lust for freedom. The single has a distinctly cinematic sound, and a climactic lyrical narrative – that “white noise” refrain from the chorus at odds with the instrumental sound, which is anything but.

Lewis Harley’s vocals are cynical, a little biting, but not so much so that you’d feel unable to sing along. His voice is perfectly suited to the indie rock sound of the single, redolent of Heavy Weather’s purported Britpop influences – but distinctly Scottish.

The song as a whole is embedded in dreich – “cold” – West Lothian context. The jangling, shoegazey sound of the guitar heavy instrumentals on the track – courtesy of Harley, Nathan Sinclair, and Jack McFaul – is confident and fresh, and keeps the single from feeling predictable. Dec Fisher and Grant Herpich – bass and drums, respectively – provide theunderpinning, head-nodding rhythm of the track. You’ll find yourself mouthing the words before you even know them all.

‘White Noise’ is a strong single, familiar enough to find a place amongst old favourites, but still original enough to be memorable on its own.
