JUSTINE BEVERLEY PAYS HOMAGE TO OTHER HURT SOULS IN NEW SINGLE, ‘SECOND LOOK’
SINGLE REVIEW | JUSTINE BEVERLEY – SECOND LOOK by Morgan Hermiston
IN 2025, Justine Beverley released her debut single, “Passenger Seat“, following shortly after with “On n’oublie pas“, a heartfelt track about her hometown. To create a consecutive pattern of sublime storytelling, Beverley has released “Second Look“, detailing a disastrous date.
Repeated lyric, “you didn’t even take a second look” perfectly depicts the picture Justine aims to portray within “Second Look“. She sets the scene of dressing up, and presenting your best self for someone who really couldn’t care less. The energy we seem to put in for those who cannot reciprocate it is reflected and emphasised in the energetic tone throughout.

Beverley is setting her foot solidly into the country-rock atmosphere, completely avoiding the cringy stereotypes that a lot of modern country melodies seems to get wrong. Teaming up with the likes of Elle King and Carly Pearce, Justine isn’t afraid to go big with her brilliant concepts and ideas. “Second Look” features Erin Ponsonby on backing vocals, and with both talents based in Glasgow, it shines yet another light upon the diverse Scottish scene.
Having worked with a variety of other women, “Second Look” cements a female frontier that fuses raw and emotive escapism with a critically curated collection of tempos and merging of melodies. This latest release sees Justine create nearly four minutes of intricately incorporated guitar work to accompany a thumping foundation. There are increments of iridescent indents that provide a lighter element to an otherwise very personal situation.
“Second Look” hones in on an honest and heartfelt topic, extending a sympathetic sound to those who have experienced similar let down or hurt. Justine Beverley is only gaining more confidence as a singer-songwriter, and she’s definitely a talent to watch out for. Originally from France, Justine seems to mould together the ability to speak from the heart, combining this with fierce and courageous country-rock elements, resulting in “Second Look“, a song that you won’t want to end.
