There is a distinct moment when you realise music isn’t just an art form – it’s a shared, chaotic excuse to forget how tired your feet are, look a stranger in the eye and scream until your throat hurts. For years, heavy music has occasionally taken itself far too seriously, wrapping itself in grim fog and pseudo-intellectual gloom.

And then there is Electric Callboy.

Walking into Tanzneid, the follow-up to their runaway global phenomenon Tekkno, you aren’t looking for a quiet, contemplative acoustic record to sip tea by the window to. You’re looking for the audio equivalent of a confetti cannon going off directly in your face. And boy, do these Germans deliver. But beneath the neon spandex, the ridiculous mullets, and the tongue-in-cheek humour, there is a profoundly human core to this madness: an undeniable, desperate need to bring people together through sheer, unadulterated joy.

The title track and opener, ‘Tanzneid’ wastes zero time dragging you into the deep end. Chugging metalcore guitars collide head-first with pulsating club synths, proving once again that Nico Sallach and Kevin Ratajczak have unlocked a rare chemistry. They aren’t just blending genres; they are throwing them into a blender, hitting puree, and wearing the resulting smoothie like a badge of honour.

We’ve all lived with colossal singles like ‘RATATATA’ (featuring the unstoppable force of BABYMETAL) for a while now, but hearing it nestled within the context of the full record reminds you just how brilliant that cross-cultural collision actually is. It’s bubbly, heavy, and grinning from ear to ear.

Yet, what makes Tanzneid stick to your ribs long after the speakers stop pulsing is the vulnerability hidden beneath the volume. Tracks like ‘The Way You Are’ and the heavier closing punches of ‘The Saviour‘ and ‘Revery‘ show a band willing to pull back the curtain just an inch. They let the crushing riffs breathe, reminding us that behind the theatrical stage personas are real musicians who genuinely care about the emotional resonance of a massive, stadium-sized chorus.

Their cheeky side-quests – like a glorious, glitter-ball-heavy reinvention of Sum 41’s ‘Still Waiting’ – feel less like cheap nostalgia trips and more like a love letter to the alternative DNA that raised them. It’s playful, respectful, and entirely self-aware.

Tanzneid might not reinvent the wheel that Tekkno spun into overdrive, and yes, if you fundamentally despise fun, this album will exhaust you.

But for the rest of us? It’s a masterclass in modern escapism. Electric Callboy have managed to bottle the sweat-soaked, euphoric chaos of a live arena show and squeezed it straight onto record. It’s loud, it’s messy, it’s profoundly human – and it demands that you dance through every single breakdown.
