CHLOE SLATER’S NEW RELEASE ‘FIG TREE’ IS ONE FOR THE GIRLS
SINGLE REVIEW | CHLOE SLATER – FIG TREE by Emma Carrington
Online sensation, Chloe Slater, best known for her TikTok presence recently released her newest single ‘Fig Tree’.
The title refers to Sylvia Plath‘s fig tree analogy found in The Bell Jar [I saw my life branching out before me like the green fig tree in the story. From the tip of every branch, like a fat purple fig, a wonderful future beckoned and winked – Sylvia Plath], which challenges the narrative that a woman’s path is already preempted. Focusing on femininity and womens rights, Slater’s lyrics encapsulate this energy perfectly, speaking of her own and wider shared issues as a woman.
The song has a sort of garage rock, raw homemade feel to it, which channels Slater’s powerful feelings towards the theme of femininty. This idea is heightened when she states “How many buzz words can we fit on a pink taxed box” showcasing the artist’s in depth views towards societal standards for women and challenging them in order to fit her own regime and not that imposed on her.
“Fig Tree is an exploration of choice feminism and how it feels to be a woman in a society that frowns upon visible signs of aging. It’s an upbeat and uplifting song with a reminder to never pay too much attention to society’s unfair standards.” – Chloe Slater
Chloe Slater’s work fits her predominantly teenage audience and actively uses terms that I – as one of those teenage girls – have personally have heard thrown about online through the likes of TikTok. Whilst it makes sense because it fits her listener demographic, it also comes off as preachy in some parts, reflecting what the masses think opposed to her own belief, which is key in a song like this.
As a young artist who has only recently begun to write and produce music, and it’s definitely exciting to see (and hear!) Chloe Slater’s growth. She definitely knows her audience which is one of the most important parts of artist development and I am excited to see how she continues to progress.
Chloe Slater heads out on her headline UK tour early next year with tickets already sold out on some dates – check latest availability HERE!
