PASTEL TRULY OUTDO THEMSELVES WITH NEW ALBUM ‘SOULS IN MOTION’
The first time I heard Pastel and their song “Deeper Than Holy,” I played the song on repeat for months and anticipated great things for the young band. However, I have to be honest, over the months, my initial excitement waned slightly. Don’t be perturbed by this admission; it’s a compliment. As time went on, their publicity and press coverage seemed to pigeonhole them into a segment of the indie genre that, for me, didn’t fully capture their brilliance and essence. While all the iconic indie elements were certainly present, I always felt they had much more to offer, something unique that set them apart from the generic indie bands and crowd. So, when their highly anticipated debut album, “Souls In Motion,” landed in the NE inbox, I wanted to give it a listen to see where their journey had led them and I am really glad I did. I felt the same thrill that I experienced when I first heard “Deeper Than Holy.” From the first play, I was completely drawn in and fully invested in the band once more. “Heroes Blood” is quite the opener with heavy guitars that hook you in immediately.
Now, if you’re like me and are always seeking an album that captivates from start to finish without a dull moment, Pastel’s debut, “Souls In Motion,” is exactly what you need in your life. A band can rarely pull that off, especially on their first album. This album flows effortlessly, blending beloved fan tracks like “Deeper Than Holy” and the evocative “Isaiah,” which stands shoulder to shoulder with early masterpieces by The Verve.
This album is full of new and innovative tracks that illustrate the band’s evolving sound and deepening creative ambition. Every song Pastel has ever produced testifies to their ability to capture and deliver the true spirit of their Manchester origins while pushing their music into new, exciting areas, much like Oasis did at the height of their creative powers. “Sunny Side” is a slower number on the album that creates a dreamy atmosphere with its ethereal percussion and harmonies, while “Dancing On A Pin” brings swagger and energy with powerful riffs and an anthemic chorus.
“Leave A Light On (A Velvet Storm)” is particularly special: a slow-burning, epic tune that evokes the spirit and feel of icons like The Rolling Stones and The Verve.
“Your Day,” on the other hand, is a different experience, with dreamy shoegaze enveloped by layers of guitars, invigorated by a strong edge with immortal riffs. The drums are impressively tight and precise, maintaining a relentless, driving rhythm throughout the song. ‘Escape’ is one of the most dreamy and beautiful songs I’ve heard in a long time. I love the blend of melody, vocals, and lyrics in this song. You’ll feel as if you’re taking a deep breath of fresh air as you listen to the song.
The production, led by J. Fender and mixed with flair by James Kenosha, elevates both the record and Pastel’s artistry to new heights. Dynamic arrangements and studio wizardry bring detailed layers and textured depths to the forefront while retaining the raw, untamed energy quintessential to Pastel. This record is a true work of art, with meticulous attention to detail that treats the listener to a rich auditory experience.
Calling “Souls In Motion” a masterpiece is not flattery or hyperbole but an objective fact. I love it and it’s one of the most exciting albums I’ve had the pleasure to hear this year. It is poised to take Pastel’s music into new and exciting dimensions. Every song showcases the band’s incredible creativity and artistic vision, merging lush, dreamy soundscapes with deep, thought-provoking lyrics. The album draws heavily from the rich and diverse musical landscape of the 90s, incorporating elements of grunge, shoegaze, and alternative rock. These influences are woven seamlessly into Pastel’s unique sound, creating a nostalgic yet fresh listening experience. The album’s quality speaks volumes about the dedication and hard work that went into its making, highlighting the passion and effort of all involved.
“Souls In Motion” is not just an album; it’s an experience that promises to resonate with dreamers and music lovers alike.
