SINGLE REVIEW | THE ROOKS – GET UP by Emma Carrington

Rating: 3 out of 5.

Glasgow’s five- piece The Rooks return with their latest single released earlier this month, ‘Get Up‘; a track that effortlessly blends elements of R&B, funk, and rock & roll into a polished, feel-good groove. Known for their rich harmonies and feel good sound that has been packing venues The Rooks have definitely put their all into this new single

From the first notes “Get Up” pulls listeners in with a tight, rhythmic bassline. The band’s signature vocal work shines, particularly in the chorus, where layered harmonies add depth and warmth. The production is sleek, and the arrangement cleverly balances energy and restraint, making it easy to nod along. However it is as basic as you would expect from a band of that size, and there is definitely room for them to improve independently as artists. There isn’t much particularly unique or new within the single instrumentally, it all forms together nicely into a little easy-to-consume package that isn’t reaching to be unique or groundbreaking, but I appreciate that they are still finding their sound.

Lyrically, the song carries a motivational message, urging listeners to push past obstacles and embrace their unique and true self. While this theme is engaging and relatable to the average person the lyrics themselves lean on familiar tropes, feeling predictable rather than profound. A bit more lyrical experimentation could have pushed the track beyond its safe, radio-friendly appeal

That said, what The Rooks do well, they do exceptionally well. The musicianship is tight, the groove is undeniable, and the song’s overall mood is undeniably uplifting. “Get Up” may not be a reinvention of their sound, but it’s a solid addition to their catalogue — one that fans of their smooth, soulful style will surely appreciate. For those who enjoy artists like Anderson Paak, The Rooks could be for you. Returning to King Tuts as a sellout headliner recently, it will be interesting to see their sound grow and from in the future.
